SEO for schools: be found when parents start looking

Parents shortlist schools on Google months before admissions open, searching by board, area and fees. This guide shows how a school website can answer those searches and be named by AI assistants.

What parents actually search for

Parents search by board, area and class, and then for admission details. Most of this happens between October and March, so your pages should be ready before then.

  • Board and place: "CBSE schools near me", "IB schools in Hyderabad", "ICSE schools in Whitefield Bengaluru".
  • Stage: "best pre-primary school in Gachibowli", "schools with nursery admission near me".
  • Admissions: "school name admission 2027-28", "school name fee structure", "nursery admission age in Telangana".
  • Features: "schools with transport in Kondapur", "day boarding schools in Bengaluru".

Use the Question Finder to see what parents ask about your area and board.

Which pages a school website needs

  • An Admissions page for the coming academic year with the process, key dates, age criteria, documents required and how to apply. Update the year every season instead of creating a new URL.
  • A page per stage: pre-primary, primary, middle and senior school, each with curriculum, timings and class sizes.
  • A curriculum page explaining your board (CBSE, ICSE, IB, Cambridge or State board) in plain language for parents.
  • A fees page or a clear statement of how parents can get the fee structure.
  • Facilities, transport routes and a faculty page with qualifications.
  • A contact and location page with map, timings and the admissions office phone.

Page-level must-haves

  • Titles that include board and area: "CBSE School in Kondapur, Hyderabad | School Name". Keep each unique and check with the Meta Tag Generator.
  • Schema: School (or Preschool, ElementarySchool, HighSchool) with address, phone, logo and affiliation details, from the Schema Generator.
  • Readable text, not just PDFs. Admission forms and circulars can be PDFs, but the key facts should be on the page itself.
  • One clear H1 per page. Check headings with the Heading Checker.
  • Alt text on campus and activity photos describing what is shown, without naming children.

Google Business Profile and local signals

Most parents look within a few kilometres of home, so your Google Business Profile does a lot of the work. Use the category that fits (CBSE school, International school, Preschool), add real campus photos, and keep admission office hours accurate. Ask parents for honest reviews and reply to them courteously. Keep the school name, address and phone identical everywhere; the local SEO guide explains why.

If you have more than one campus, give each its own profile and its own page on the site, with that campus's address, classes offered, transport areas and admissions contact. Parents in Miyapur and parents in Kokapet search differently, and a single page for all campuses can't match both. Post admission dates, open house days and events on your profile during the season. These posts show on Google Search and Maps and remind parents who are comparing schools that admissions are open.

AEO and GEO: answering parents and AI assistants

Put the questions parents ask on your Admissions page with direct answers: "What is the age for nursery admission?", "Is there an entrance test?", "Do you provide transport to Miyapur?" Mark them up with the FAQ Schema generator.

Parents increasingly ask ChatGPT or Gemini for "good IB schools in Hyderabad". AI assistants mention schools whose board, location, stages, founding year and facilities are stated clearly and consistently. Make sure AI crawlers can read your site with the AI Crawler Checker and read how to rank on ChatGPT.

Common school website mistakes

  • Admission details only on a banner or in a PDF, which search engines can't read well.
  • Last year's dates left up, confusing parents and search engines alike.
  • Rankings or results claims you can't verify. Stick to facts and follow your board's guidelines on publicity.
  • Photos of children without parental consent, or alt text that names them.
  • A slow homepage carrying a heavy video or slider; test it with Page Speed.

Questions

When should a school start SEO for admissions?

Start at least three to four months before admissions open. Parents begin searching early, and new or updated pages take time to be crawled and settle in results. For a typical April academic year, that means having your admissions, fees and curriculum pages ready by September or October.

Should schools publish their fee structure online?

Parents search for fees often, so a page that addresses it helps. If you publish exact figures, keep them current. If you prefer not to, explain what is included, how fees are paid and how parents can get the current structure, so the page still answers the search honestly.

What schema should a school website use?

Use School, or a more specific type such as Preschool, ElementarySchool or HighSchool. Include the name, address, phone, logo, website and opening hours. Add FAQPage schema to your admissions page and BreadcrumbList across the site. The schema should match what is visible on the page.

How do schools appear in ChatGPT answers?

AI assistants name schools they can describe confidently. State your board, location, classes offered, founding year and facilities clearly on your site, keep the same details on Google Business Profile and directories, allow AI crawlers in robots.txt, and add an llms.txt file summarising the school.
