Local SEO in India: how to show up when nearby customers search

Local SEO is how a clinic in Kukatpally, a caterer in Pune or a furniture shop in Kochi gets found when someone nearby searches. Most of it is free and within your control.

What is local SEO and who needs it?

Local SEO is the work that helps your business appear in Google Maps, the local pack of three businesses on a results page, and searches that include a place or "near me". Any business that serves customers in a specific city or area needs it: clinics, restaurants, salons, coaching centres, builders, shops and local service providers.

Google ranks local results on three broad things: relevance (do you offer what was searched), distance (how close you are to the searcher or the place named) and prominence (how well known and well reviewed you are). You can't change distance, so the work goes into the other two.

How do you set up Google Business Profile properly?

Claim and verify your free Google Business Profile, then fill in every field accurately. It is the single biggest factor in Maps results.

  1. Choose the most specific primary category that describes your main business, such as Dental clinic rather than Doctor, or South Indian restaurant rather than Restaurant. Add secondary categories only for services you genuinely offer.
  2. Use your real business name, exactly as it appears on your signboard. Adding keywords or the city to the name breaks Google's guidelines and can get the profile suspended.
  3. Set the right address or service area. Shop-front businesses show an address. Businesses that visit customers, like pest control or home tutors, can hide the address and list service areas instead.
  4. Add hours, phone, website and holiday hours, and keep them current through festivals like Diwali, Pongal or Eid.
  5. Upload real photos of the outside, inside, team and work. Add new ones regularly.
  6. List services or products with short descriptions and prices where you can.
  7. Answer the Q&A and post updates or offers occasionally.

Why does NAP consistency matter?

NAP stands for name, address and phone number, and it should be identical everywhere your business appears. When Google sees the same details across your website, profile and directories, it becomes more confident that your listing is accurate.

  • Pick one format and stick to it, including small things like Rd versus Road and whether you include the landmark.
  • Use a phone number you'll keep. Changing numbers means updating every listing.
  • Put your NAP in the footer of every page and on the Contact page, as text rather than an image.
  • Fix old listings with a previous address or number. Search your old phone number on Google to find them.

Which Indian directories should you list on?

List on the directories your customers actually use, not every directory you can find. A handful of accurate listings beats dozens of half-filled ones.

  • Justdial is widely used for local services and shops across most Indian cities.
  • Sulekha suits home services, tutors, packers and movers, and event services.
  • IndiaMART matters for manufacturers, wholesalers and B2B suppliers.
  • Practo for clinics and doctors, Zomato and Swiggy for restaurants, and MagicBricks or 99acres for real estate.
  • Bing Places and Apple Business Connect cover searches outside Google at little extra effort.

Use the exact same NAP on every listing and link back to your website.

How do you get more Google reviews?

Ask every satisfied customer, at the right moment, with a direct link. Most people are happy to leave a review if it takes less than a minute.

  1. Copy the review link from your Business Profile and share it on WhatsApp after a job is done or an order is delivered.
  2. Print it as a QR code at your counter or on bills.
  3. Ask customers to mention what they bought and where, in their own words. Don't script reviews.
  4. Reply to every review, good and bad, politely and specifically. A calm reply to a complaint reassures future customers.

Never buy reviews or offer discounts in exchange for them. Google removes them and can restrict your profile.

Should you create location pages and regional language pages?

Create a location page for each city or area you genuinely serve, and regional language pages if your customers search in those languages. Both help Google match you to more searches, as long as each page has real, specific content.

Location pages

If you have branches or serve several areas, give each its own page with the address, phone, hours, a map, directions from nearby landmarks, photos of that branch and reviews from customers there. Avoid copying one page and swapping the city name; Google treats those as near-duplicates.

Regional language search

Many Indians search in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Marathi and other languages, often typed in Roman script, such as "dentist hyderabad lo". If your customers do this, add pages written in that language, link them with hreflang tags from the hreflang generator, and use the keyword explorer to see the phrasing people use. SEO Studio can write the full report in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Bengali or Gujarati.

How do you add LocalBusiness schema?

Add LocalBusiness structured data to your homepage and location pages so search engines can read your name, address, phone, hours, geo coordinates and service area directly. Use the most specific type available, such as Dentist, Restaurant or HomeAndConstructionBusiness.

The schema generator writes the JSON-LD for you. Make sure the details match your Business Profile exactly. For the full list of local and site-wide checks, see the SEO checklist, and for AI assistants, how to rank on ChatGPT.

Questions

Is Google Business Profile free in India?

Yes. Creating, verifying and managing a Google Business Profile is completely free. Verification is usually done by phone, email, video or a postcard, depending on what Google offers for your business. Be cautious of anyone charging a fee simply to create a listing or claiming special access to Google.

How long does local SEO take to show results?

A newly verified, complete Business Profile can start appearing for some searches within a few weeks. Climbing into the local pack for competitive searches in big cities like Bengaluru or Mumbai usually takes several months of steady reviews, accurate listings and good location pages. Results depend heavily on local competition.

Do Justdial and Sulekha listings help Google rankings?

They help indirectly. Accurate listings on well-known directories confirm your name, address and phone to Google and can send real customers and calls by themselves. Their value comes from consistency and visibility, so keep your details identical everywhere rather than creating many listings on low-quality directories.

Can I rank in a city where I don't have an office?

In Google Maps, it's difficult, because the map results lean heavily on physical location. Service-area businesses can list areas they cover. In normal search results, a genuinely useful page about your service in that city can rank, especially if you have real customers, projects or reviews from there.

Should I write my website in Hindi or Telugu?

Add regional language pages if your customers search in that language and you can serve them in it. Keep the English pages too, and connect the versions with hreflang tags. Write each version properly rather than relying on raw machine translation, which often reads poorly and may confuse local customers.
