The SEO checklist for 2026: 30 steps for search, answers and AI

This checklist covers the work that moves the needle for most business websites, grouped so you can tackle one area at a time. Each item links to a free tool where one helps.

How to use this SEO checklist

Work through the groups in order, because technical problems can stop every other fix from having an effect. Tick off what's already done, note what isn't, and fix the most important pages first: your homepage, main services or products, and contact page.

If you'd rather see every gap at once, run a free full-site report and it will check most of these items across up to 50 pages and write the fixes.

Technical SEO checklist

Technical SEO makes sure search engines can reach, read and store your pages. Do these first.

  1. Site loads on HTTPS with one version only, either www or non-www, and the other redirecting to it.
  2. robots.txt doesn't block real pages. Build a clean one with the robots.txt generator.
  3. XML sitemap exists and is submitted in Google Search Console. Make one with the sitemap generator.
  4. No stray noindex tags on pages you want found. Test with the indexability checker.
  5. Redirects are single hops with no chains or loops. Trace them with the redirect checker.
  6. Mobile Core Web Vitals pass or are close. Check with the page speed checker.
  7. Clean, readable URLs using a few words, not IDs. Tidy them with the slug optimizer.
  8. hreflang tags are set if you have pages in more than one language. Write them with the hreflang generator.

On-page SEO checklist

On-page SEO makes each page clearly about one topic, so search engines know when to show it.

  1. One primary keyword per page, not shared with another page. Research with the keyword explorer.
  2. Unique title tag of about 50 to 60 characters with the keyword near the start. Preview it in the SERP preview.
  3. Unique meta description of about 120 to 155 characters. Generate tags with the meta tag generator and check many at once with the bulk length checker.
  4. One H1 per page and headings in order. Check with the heading checker.
  5. Descriptive alt text on every meaningful image. Find gaps with the image alt checker.
  6. Keyword used naturally, not stuffed. The keyword density checker flags overuse.
  7. Open Graph tags set so shared links look right. Check with the OG checker.

Content checklist

Good content answers the searcher's question better than the other pages competing for it.

  1. Each service or product has its own page, not one long page listing everything.
  2. Main pages explain the essentials: what it is, who it's for, where you serve, how pricing works and what happens next. The word counter helps spot thin pages.
  3. Internal links connect related pages with descriptive link text.
  4. Proof is on the page: real photos, team names, certifications, years in business and genuine reviews.
  5. Old content is updated or merged, so you don't have several weak pages on the same topic.

Local SEO checklist

Local SEO helps you show up in Google Maps and "near me" searches. It matters for any business that serves a city or area.

  1. Google Business Profile is verified with the right primary category, hours, photos and service areas.
  2. Name, address and phone (NAP) match exactly on your site, profile and directories.
  3. Listed on relevant directories such as Justdial, Sulekha or IndiaMART, depending on your business.
  4. LocalBusiness schema on your site. Write it with the schema generator.

The local SEO India guide covers each of these in detail.

AEO checklist: becoming the answer

AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) shapes your content so search engines can lift a direct answer from it for featured snippets and People also ask boxes.

  1. Find real questions people ask with the question finder.
  2. Use questions as headings and answer each in 40 to 60 words straight underneath.
  3. Add FAQ schema to question sections with the FAQ schema generator.

GEO checklist: getting named by AI assistants

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) makes your business easy for ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity to read and recommend. There are no guarantees here, but these steps remove the obvious blocks.

  1. AI search crawlers are allowed in robots.txt. Check with the AI crawler checker and set rules with the AI robots.txt rules tool.
  2. llms.txt is published at your site root. Make one with the llms.txt generator.
  3. Facts are stated plainly on your homepage and About page: what, where, for whom and since when.

Questions

What is the most important item on an SEO checklist?

Making sure your important pages can be crawled and indexed. If robots.txt blocks a page or it carries a noindex tag, no amount of keyword work or content will help it rank. After that, unique titles and one clear keyword per page tend to give the biggest return for the least effort.

How long does it take to complete this checklist?

For a small business site of 10 to 30 pages, the technical and on-page items usually take a few days of focused work. Content, reviews and directory listings take longer and are ongoing. Using a tool that writes titles, descriptions and schema for you cuts the on-page work down considerably.

Is this SEO checklist different for WordPress or Shopify?

The checklist is the same, because search engines judge the finished pages rather than the platform. What changes is where you make each fix. On WordPress, an SEO plugin handles titles, sitemaps and schema. On Shopify, many of these settings live in the theme and the online store preferences.

Do I need AEO and GEO items if I only care about Google?

They help with Google too. Question-style headings with short answers can win featured snippets and People also ask boxes, and clear facts and schema help Google understand your business. The extra GEO steps, like allowing AI crawlers and publishing llms.txt, take little time and keep options open for AI search.

How often should I go through the SEO checklist again?

Review the full checklist every few months and after any redesign, migration or big batch of new pages. Technical items can break silently when themes or plugins update. A monthly monitoring report helps you catch problems like new noindex tags or missing titles before they cost you traffic.
