SEO for restaurants and caterers: own your searches, not just your listings

Zomato and Swiggy bring orders, but they take a commission and own the customer. Your own site and Google Business Profile are where reservations, catering enquiries and direct orders come from.

What diners and event hosts actually search for

Restaurant searches are mostly local and immediate. Catering searches are planned and higher value, and that is where your own website does the most work.

  • Dining: "biryani near me", "rooftop restaurant in Jubilee Hills", "family restaurant in Koramangala".
  • Occasion: "restaurants for birthday party in Hyderabad", "private dining room near me".
  • Catering: "wedding caterers in Hyderabad", "South Indian catering for 200 people", "corporate lunch catering Bengaluru".
  • Brand: "restaurant name menu", "restaurant name timings", "restaurant name contact number".

Your own site vs Zomato and Swiggy

Keep your delivery app listings, but don't let them be your only presence. When someone searches your restaurant's name, your own site and Google Business Profile should appear first with the menu, timings and phone, so they can call, reserve or order direct.

Delivery apps rarely rank for "wedding caterers in Hyderabad" or "corporate catering". Those searches belong to caterers with their own pages, and that business comes without commission.

Make direct contact easy. Put a tap-to-call phone number and a WhatsApp link at the top of every page, show today's opening hours, and link the menu from the homepage. If you take direct orders or reservations, link to that system from your site and your Google Business Profile. Cloud kitchens without a dining room should still have a simple site that lists each brand, the delivery areas covered and links to the apps, so a search for the brand name finds something you control.

Which pages a restaurant or caterer needs

  • A menu page in HTML text with dishes, short descriptions and prices. A photo of a printed menu or a PDF is hard for search engines to read.
  • One page per location with address, map, hours, phone, parking and reservation details.
  • Catering pages by occasion: wedding, corporate, house parties, festivals, with sample menus, minimum guest count and how pricing works.
  • Private dining or events page with capacity and packages.
  • For cloud kitchens: a brand page per virtual brand, delivery areas served and links to each ordering platform.

Page-level must-haves

  • Titles with cuisine and area: "Andhra Meals Restaurant in Madhapur, Hyderabad | Name". Test with the SERP Preview.
  • Schema: Restaurant (with servesCuisine, address, opening hours, menu URL and priceRange) for dining, and FoodEstablishment or LocalBusiness for catering. The Schema Generator builds this.
  • Food photos with alt text describing the dish ("Hyderabadi chicken dum biryani in a clay pot"), checked with the Image Alt Checker.
  • Social tags so links shared on WhatsApp and Instagram show a good photo; check with the OG Checker.

Google Business Profile and local signals

For "near me" searches, Google Business Profile usually matters more than anything else. Choose a precise primary category (South Indian restaurant, Caterer), add the menu, upload fresh photos, set holiday hours, and reply to reviews. Keep your name, address and phone identical on your site, Zomato, Swiggy and other listings. More in the local SEO guide.

AEO and GEO for food businesses

Answer the questions people ask before booking or ordering: "Do you have vegetarian or Jain options?", "What is the minimum order for catering?", "Is there parking?", "How far in advance should we book wedding catering?" Put each as a heading with a short answer and add FAQPage schema using the FAQ Schema generator.

When someone asks ChatGPT for "the best biryani in Hyderabad" or "good wedding caterers in Bengaluru", AI assistants draw on what is written about you on your site, Google and food listings. Describe your cuisine, signature dishes, locations and catering capacity clearly and consistently, and publish an llms.txt file.

Common mistakes and how SEO Studio helps

  • Menu as an image only, with no text for search engines.
  • Wrong or outdated hours on Google, which turns away customers.
  • No catering page, leaving the highest-value searches to competitors.
  • Different phone numbers on the site, Google and delivery apps.

Paste your homepage into SEO Studio to get a keyword map, titles, descriptions, Restaurant schema, FAQ answers, social tags and llms.txt for every page, free. If you don't have a website yet, describe your business and it will plan the pages for you.

Questions

Does a restaurant need a website if it is on Zomato and Swiggy?

Yes. Delivery apps charge commission and control the customer relationship. Your own website and Google Business Profile let people find your menu, timings and phone, reserve a table or order direct, and they rank for catering and events searches that delivery apps usually don't cover.

How can a caterer get wedding catering enquiries from Google?

Create a dedicated wedding catering page with sample menus, cuisines, minimum guest count, how pricing works and areas served. Add photos with descriptive alt text, answer common questions with FAQ schema, and keep your Google Business Profile set to the Caterer category with genuine reviews from past events.

What schema should a restaurant website use?

Use Restaurant schema with your name, address, phone, opening hours, cuisine, price range and a link to your menu page. Use a separate entry per location if you have branches. Caterers without a dining room can use FoodEstablishment or LocalBusiness. Add FAQPage schema for common questions.

Should my restaurant menu be a PDF or on the page?

Put the menu on the page as text, with dish names, short descriptions and prices. Search engines and AI assistants can read and quote it, and it loads faster on phones. You can still offer a downloadable PDF for people who want to print it.
