What shoppers actually search for
Shoppers search by product type and attribute first, then compare brands. Category pages usually target the broad terms, and product pages target the specific ones.
- Category: "cotton kurta sets for women", "cold pressed groundnut oil", "organic baby clothes online".
- Attribute: "handloom saree under 3000", "stainless steel water bottle 1 litre".
- Comparison and question: "is A2 ghee better than regular ghee", "best sunscreen for oily skin India".
- Local intent: "buy millets online Hyderabad", "same day delivery cakes Bengaluru".
Use the Keyword Explorer for category terms and the Question Finder for buying questions.
Which pages a store needs
- Category pages with a short, useful introduction above or below the products: what the range covers, how to choose, sizes or materials. Target one primary keyword per category.
- Product pages with an original description, specifications, size guide, delivery and returns details, and real reviews.
- Buying guides that answer comparison questions and link to the relevant categories.
- Trust pages: About, contact with a real address, shipping, returns and refund policies.
Plan the structure before adding products. Each category should target a phrase people search, and subcategories should only exist when they have enough products and their own search demand, such as "silk sarees" under "sarees". Link categories from the main menu, link products back to their category, and add related products on each product page. A clear structure helps search engines find every product within a few clicks of the homepage and tells them which pages matter most. Check it with the Word Counter on category intros so none are left as a single line.
Page-level must-haves and Product schema
- Titles: "Cotton Kurta Sets for Women | Brand" for categories, "Product Name, Key Attribute | Brand" for products. Check lengths in bulk with the Bulk Length Checker.
- Product schema with Offer: name, image, description, SKU, brand, price in INR, availability, and aggregateRating only if real reviews are shown on the page. The Schema Generator can build it.
- Clean URLs such as /collections/kurta-sets; see the Slug Optimizer.
- Alt text on every product image describing the product, colour and angle.
- Organization and BreadcrumbList schema sitewide.
Shopify and WooCommerce fixes
Both platforms create duplicate and thin URLs by default. Fix these before writing more content.
- Shopify: products appear under both /products/ and /collections/.../products/ paths. Make sure internal links use the canonical /products/ URL and the theme outputs the right canonical tag.
- WooCommerce: tag, filter and sorting pages can create thousands of thin URLs. Keep them out of the index and out of the sitemap; check with the Indexability Checker.
- Out-of-stock products: keep the page live with availability set correctly if it will return; redirect to the closest product or category if it is gone for good.
- Sitemaps and robots.txt: check both with the Sitemap Generator and Robots.txt Generator.
AEO and GEO for online stores
Answer product questions on the page: "Is this suitable for sensitive skin?", "How do I wash it?", "What is the delivery time to Chennai?" Short answers with FAQPage schema can show in People also ask; build it with the FAQ Schema generator.
Shoppers now ask ChatGPT and Gemini for "best cold pressed oil brands in India". AI assistants mention brands they can describe with clear facts: what you make, materials, sourcing, certifications and price range. Write these plainly, allow AI crawlers, and add an llms.txt file listing your main categories.
Common e-commerce SEO mistakes
- Manufacturer descriptions copied across your site and marketplaces, leaving nothing unique to rank.
- Empty category pages with only a product grid.
- Fake or inflated review markup, which breaks Google's guidelines and consumer protection rules on fake reviews.
- Heavy apps and scripts slowing product pages on mobile; test with Page Speed.

Questions
Should a D2C brand focus SEO on category or product pages?
Both, for different searches. Category pages usually rank for broader terms like "cotton kurta sets", so give them a short helpful introduction and one primary keyword. Product pages rank for specific searches, so give each an original description, specifications and reviews. Start with your best-selling categories.
What schema should a product page have?
Use Product schema with an Offer: name, images, description, SKU, brand, price in INR, currency and availability. Add aggregateRating and review only when genuine reviews are visible on the page. Include BreadcrumbList for the category path and Organization schema for your brand across the whole site.
Is Shopify good for SEO in India?
Shopify handles the basics well: clean templates, sitemaps, SSL and editable titles. Watch for duplicate product URLs through collection paths, thin tag pages, and slow apps. With those fixed and good content on category and product pages, a Shopify store can rank as well as any other platform.
Can I use the same product description as on Amazon or Flipkart?
You can, but your own site then offers search engines nothing unique, and the marketplace usually ranks instead. Write an original description for your site that covers materials, use, care and sizing in more depth, and keep a shorter version for marketplaces.
What should I do with out-of-stock product pages?
If the product will return, keep the page live, mark it out of stock in the page and schema, and offer a notify option or related products. If it is discontinued for good, redirect the URL to the closest product or category so you keep the traffic and links it earned.
